Uber ~20–25 min · R$60–90 (~$12–18). Check the plate, back seat, share trip status.
Drop the bags and cross the avenue. Twelve days of cold end at that water — stand in it before you unpack anything.
Sunday night: real groceries wait till Monday. Open tonight — Shopping Praia da Costa (till 10), Drogasil (24h), beachfront kiosks.

A capixaba is a person from Espírito Santo. The star is moqueca capixaba — fish simmered in a black clay pot, no coconut milk, purely about the fish.

The beach kiosks: sit with your feet nearly in the sand, order chopp and grilled fish. Some of your best meals will cost $15.
The cooking night: buy a panela de barro at Goiabeiras, buy shrimp and fish at a market, cook a moqueca in the apartment. Film it.

A fishing village on stilts over the mangrove, inside Vitória. Home of the desfiadeiras — women who shred crab by hand, itself registered cultural heritage. All LUNCH ONLY.

August is PEAK humpback season off Espírito Santo. Almost no visitor knows it’s on offer here.

The bohemian surf village 20 min south. Low-rise, no towers, a real local scene — where capixabas actually surf.
Eat there: Casa Di Mar (⭐4.4) and Espera Maré (⭐4.5) — beachfront moqueca and live music, both in Barra do Jucu.

Three kart tracks sit side by side on one avenue in Jardim Camburi — the motorsport cluster.

Wednesday is quieter — check Seu Joaquim & Bar Barraco’s Instagram that morning before committing the Uber.
Seu Joaquim Bar — live music, cover charge, big local following. Ensaio Botequim — the classic: ice-cold chopp, petiscos, live music, loud and joyful.
Bar Barraco — from 5 PM Tue–Sun, younger crowd. Pub 426 · Wanted Pub · Motor Rockers — rock and cover bands. Woods Vitória — the actual club if you want to dance late.

Setup — get it right once
Set the ISO dial to 400. If it’s wrong, every frame is wrong.
Shoot in “A” (aperture priority). Carry two spare LR44/SR44 — the FG is battery-dependent.
The beach problem: bright sand fools the meter and your people go dark. Dial +1 exposure compensation on the beach, back to 0 indoors.

Sunga: Brazilian men wear square-cut trunks. Long board shorts read as foreign. Buy one size up, R$60–130. Brands: Mash, Lupo, Osklen.
Coffee, chocolate & jerseys
The Garoto factory store is NOT cheaper than a supermarket. Buy bulk at Supermercados BH; go to the factory only for gift boxes and the museum.

Vila Velha’s real commercial heart — a pedestrianised grid where locals buy at local prices, no tourists. Loja Megalar for jumbled cheap homewares; Atacadão da Moda for wholesale clothing (open Sun 9–1, cash beats debit); Carlão Aviamentos for fabric, “the best in the state.”

Safety
Brazil deserves respect, not fear. Praia da Costa is one of the safest beach neighborhoods in the metro. Follow street-smart habits and you’ll have zero problems.
Phone discipline — the #1 rule
Phone theft is THE crime that happens to visitors. Don’t walk with it out, don’t stop on a sidewalk to text. Front pocket, never on a table or towel.
Set up now: strong passcode, lock-screen previews OFF, know how to remote wipe. Thieves target the accounts, not the hardware.
On the ground
Uber over street taxis. Check the plate, sit in the back, share ride status, door to door at night.
The beach and boardwalk after dark are deserted and unlit. Beautiful by day, avoid entirely by night.
ATMs inside banks, malls or supermarkets, daytime only. One card and a little cash on you; backup and passports stay home.
If something happens — hand it over. Immediately, calmly, no argument. A phone is a phone. Never resist.
Ocean & sun
Rip currents: the calm-looking channel between breaking waves is exactly where they are. If caught, swim PARALLEL to the beach.
Don’t touch anything blue on the sand (caravela / man-o-war). If stung: sea water, remove tentacles with a card, find a lifeguard.
The UV is far stronger than it feels at 78°F with a sea breeze. Sunscreen every two hours, no negotiation.

Facts for the beach
Vila Velha was founded in 1535 — the first settlement in Espírito Santo. You’re staying in a 490-year-old city.
The clay pots of Goiabeiras were the first thing Brazil registered as protected intangible cultural heritage, in 2002 — before samba, before capoeira.
The Terceira Ponte is 3.3 km long with a central span 70 m above the water.
Iemanjá, goddess of the sea, is the orixá you’ll meet here: white flowers and candles floated into the ocean. If you see flowers in the surf, now you know.
